Ultra 2007
Ultra was a blast this year!!! The one downside was the INSANE amount of rain that came down during the entire show. There were a few places to take cover, but not enough to help ALL the masses. We decided to just roll with whatever mother nature hit us with and we battled through it. We were soaked through for the entire day and night. It would have been ok if it was a warm rain, but there was a pretty kickin' breeze and that kinda ruined it for us for the rest of the day.
DJ Icey:
Great show! This is what started it up for us. It was also still sunny outside and when the first wave of rainfall came down and it was still 'fun' to be playing in the rain. Flipside was MC'in for him and he was GREAT! Usually, to me, the emcee kinda brings down the show a little and pulls away from the music, but he does a great job of tying in his rhymes at the right moments without taking too much of the limelight. He's got skills.
DJ DB:
His spins were TIGHT! He didn't smile once and looked miserable up there for the whole show. His MC was Bass Nacho and he had some skills, but he had the feeling of 'last minute replacement' to me and they had no chemistry together. My wife thought otherwise, but I'm stickin' to it. He's no J-Messinian or Flipside. He's just a dude that yells really fast.
DJ Baby Anne:
I never really liked Baby Anne personally. She's too 'minimal' for me. Kinda bland beats and rhythms for my tastes. She can mix tho', so props to her. She also introduced us to the dancers on stage (which you'll see in the pics). Every time we went to the breakbeat stage (Which was often) they were there and going OFF! We spent quite a bit of time at that stage because of the insane lineup!
Stanton Warriors:
Great show! We both pretty surprised about that because his show sounded different from what we've heard on albums. We spent quite a bit of time listening here.
Fatboy Slim:
WOW! This guy's still got it. He has so much energy up on stage...you have to respect that because he really plays the crowd. He did such a great job of mixing his old stuff in with his new stuff...just enough to give a taste to the old schoolers, heheh. What an amazing set! We only stayed around for an hour of his two hour set because we wanted to go see Christopher Lawrence.
Josh Wink:
It's still weird to see him with a crew cut to me. This guy introduced me to electronic music. I'll never forget it. I was walking in Delray Beach on A1A crossing the street to get to the beach and I heard this guy at a stop light playing the song 'Higher State of Consciousness'. I had to go up to his car and find out the name of that song....and thus, my entry into electronic music was born, heheh. Anyway...Wink was great and we stayed for about an hour of his show. Very energetic performance.
Seb Fontaine and Bad Boy Bill (Seperate shows):
We're not big fans of house music. We were strollin' by and caught some of their shows and stuck around for a bit to get a breather from the other shows.
Ed Rush and Optical:
I love DnB. I can't believe I had never heard of these guys! This was our first taste of DnB that night. Great show and really energized us!!!
Pendulum:
This was the first show we caught at the main stage. The main stage was lit up beautifully. If I was a DJ, I would have loved to played here. I wasn't too familiar with this guy, but he definitely played the crowd. We stuck around for quite a while at this stage. He's got a new fan. He was also very energetic, and that scores points with me because there's nothing worse then trying to dance to a guy that just looks like he's throwing records on without any feeling (See DJ DB)
Christopher Lawrence:
He was another act on the main stage. I was able to get some video of this one. He's great! I wasn't too familiar with his stuff so at first I was kinda bummed we left Fatboy Slim to go see him, but it was worth it. He's really energetic and the crowd was awesome! He made a new fan of me also.
Well...we were wet. Mind you, throughout the 8.5 hours we were at the show...it rained...and rained HARD for about 5 of them. When it wasn't raining...it was cold and we were soaked. We had enough and unfortunately had to miss a number of acts that I REALLY wanted to see. We just couldn't take the cold and rain any more. Here's a list of the folks that I wanted to see that we missed:
Uberzone
Rabbit in the Moon
Ferry Corsten (although we heard his music spun on TWO different occasions in the breakbeat stage, heh)
Paul van Dyk
Planet of the Drums
Grooverider
Man...now that I look at that list...I really missed alot, heheh. No regrets tho'. We had a great time and the talent we saw was well worth the price of admission. All in all, great time! We'll be there next year.
I'll have a link to pics later on. There weren't TOO many pictures because of all the rain. Too bad really....there were some sights to see. Most of the pictures were in the beginning part of the day and there weren't many people around in relation to the amount there at night.
