Subject:In Defense of Greg Maddux

Mood: annoyed
Music:"You're the Best Around," Bill Conti

I never thought I'd have to write this. The idea that I would have defend Greg Maddux's credentials as one of the greatest pitchers of all time seemed about as likely as having to write about Larry Bird's skills as a basketball player, Barack Obama's skills as an orator, or Dr. James Andrews' skill with a scalpel. I mean, the guy won 355 games and is one of the greatest control pitchers of all time. He was stingy with runs during a time when the ball was flying out of the park so frequently that you'd think they were being carried out by carrier pigeons. He posted ERA's under 2.00 in two consecutive seasons during the heart of the Steroids Era, and from 1992-1998, he was absolutely dominant, posting single-season ERA's of 2.18, 2.36, 1.56, 1.63, 2.72, and 2.22. He wasn't the hardest thrower, but he still managed to strike out 3,371 batters in his career, good enough for tenth on the all-time list. He was the epitome of the complete pitcher, not only mastering his craft from the mound but also defending the position better than anyone else (he won 18 Gold Gloves - a record).

Additionally, stories about his brilliance and intelligence are so widespread and legendary that it's hard to tell what's real and what's myth. There was the time he intentionally allowed a home run to Jeff Bagwell knowing that, if they met up in the postseason, Bagwell would be looking for the same pitch, which Maddux would, of course, refrain from throwing. There was the time he predicted a trip to the hospital for his first-base coach after he detected a small, but subtle, shift from Jose Hernandez in the batter's box. Sure enough, Hernandez struck the first-base coach in the chest (although, thankfully, it didn't result in a trip to the hospital). There was the time he contradicted Leo Mazzone, only one of the greatest pitching coaches of all time, in front of the entire pitching staff about how to pitch to Bernie Williams. Mazzone, in an astonishing act of humility, deferred to Maddux. He was so smart that the only things he failed to do were cure cancer, fix the economy, and explain all the plot-holes in the "Back to the Future" trilogy.

Then there's the whole steroids thing, or in Maddux's case, a lack thereof. While Roger Clemens awaits a perjury indictment for his actions on Capitol Hill, Maddux can sit back comfortably, knowing that, as my friend who used to work for the Braves and has seen him naked on several occasions put it, he was definitely NOT on steroids. Whether this was because he had no muscle definition, he had no back-acne, no unexplained abscesses on his butt, or no shrinkage in his package, I don't know and frankly, I don't really want to know. The bottom line is that he pitched in the midst of the Steroid Era and thrived, even as his contemporaries were taking shortcuts and cheating.

So, imagine my surprise when I went on Youtube looking for Greg Maddux's recent number-retirement ceremony with the Braves and I found this:Click here for more )

Been having a little problem with my 3Gs, this has happened twice now, once last night and once about 2 weeks ago.

i try to call someone [doesn't matter who] and although it loads up the "calling" screen nothing happens, i get no ringing noise and the person gets no call, and will stay like that until i cancel.

EDIT: turning off then on fixes the problem

this been happening to anyone else?

also i have an issue with a few of my apps having the wrong icon, but i believe this is a common problem that will be fixed with the next update? anyone know more than this or even how to fix it?

thanks, Tim.

I am asking this question for my dad, who is getting himself, his wife, and me an iPhone.  His concern is if the phone is compatible with Napster.  The AT&T guy didn't know, and google is giving me conflicting answers.  My dad's primary music download service is Napster, so this is a pretty big thing for him.  If it's not compatible, I would be more than happy if any of you knew of something that could rip his Napster tracks for the iPhone.

Anyways, I don't have the iPhone yet but I'll be happy when I do get it.  Any apps that I should get (besides twitter, facebook, and myspace)?

while charging my iphone this afternoon, I realised tt the iPhone showed a fully charged battary icon, but on the main window page, it only indicated half-charged. So, I didn't care and I brought it out and within a few hours, the battary was dead. I just got home and I tried charging it again and the same thing happened..fully charged icon but half charged. Can anyone advise? Thanks

I checked the tags, but there was really nothing on this.

I was just wondering if anyone else has discussed the possibility of a link between diabetes and depression with their endo.

Details that will probably get long and rambling )

I'm taking action to end Alaska’s cruel and barbaric policy on aerial gunning of wolves. Taking action is easy at http://actionfund.defenders.org/akwolf -- I hope you’ll join me.

Alaskan wolves can be shot from airplanes -- or chased to the point of exhaustion, then shot at close range. Across large areas of Alaska, no wolf is off limits -- not even pregnant females. More than five hundred wolves have been killed over the past three winters with plans to target hundreds more in the coming years and open up new areas to aerial control.

Help me protect these magnificent creatures -- and end Alaska’s cruel policy.

Go to http://actionfund.defenders.org/akwolf to help stop Alaska's wolf massacre now.

Thanks for your help protecting wildlife.

Subject:Diabetic eating on an extreme budget.
Security:Public

And by extreme budget, I mean dirt poor. Usually, I'm pretty good with eating a decent balance of carbs, enough to keep my T2 levels under control, but I'm going through a tough financial time where food is on the far back burner (due to a office screw up with my food stamps) and whatever's available is definitely not good. My levels are higher than usual (today I was in the 130-140 range, including fasting).

So how does one eat on diabetic level without breaking the bank? I keep getting tips to eat beans, rice, and pasta all day which obviously won't work. Around here, affordable fruits and vegetables are limited to corn, bananas, carrots, iceberg lettuce, other canned veggies, and potatoes. It's getting to the point where I'm like "Screw this. I need to eat something." but I know that thinking will lead me into problems and I don't know where to start.

Subject:Bad outlet?
Security:Public

So I plugged my iPhone 3G into a public power outlet earlier, and while the iPhone appeared to be charging, the battery indicator was in fact going down, and going down more rapidly than if it hadn't been plugged in at all. Also, the back of the phone started getting much hotter than normal. It's not happening at home using the same charger, so I assume it's something to do with the public outlet. Have any of you experienced this and can tell me what could be going wrong? It seems to me the phone should be able to work on AC power without any battery at all, so I don't see why it would go down, but I should point out that what appears to be a wall-mounted cell tower antenna is in the line-of-site of this particular outlet less than 100 feet away.

Anyone had any experience with Bluetooth headphones? As in proper two ear music headphones not just the one ear hands free kind.

Do you get good unbroken sound out of them? And most importantly do they work with iPhones (track control and mic for calls)

I've checked out a couple of Sony ones that looked pretty good but at $200 (australian) they are a little out of my price range.

Thanks, Tim

I don't know if it's because I know who won, but I am trying to watch a replay of the HR derby and it is just boring as hell. I'm not even through the first batter yet. Did anyone else feel that way?

I recently abandoned Palm and didn't like my Dell Axim OS very much at all, so now I have a Touch. Does anyone have any suggestions for a note pad app similar to what the Palm had, preferably one that might also offer encryption?

I would have liked to have gotten an iPhone, but I won't as long as AT&T has it locked-in. (The fact that they don't offer service up here is entirely beside the point.)

Thanks!

Subject:The All-Star Game debate

Okay, we've heard all the debates over the past few days, over whether the All-Star Game should decide Game 7 of the World Series. And we all know this was to reassure fans, who were pissed off after the 2002 ASG was declared a tie, basically promising that would - could - never happen again. But now I'm honestly curious which of these gripes folks would rather deal with, so here goes:

I’ve wanted a sewing machine for years but I assumed that I wouldn’t be able to effectively use one without being able to use the foot pedal. A few months ago, someone told me about an affordable sewing machine that had functionality that allowed one to start and stop sewing with a button and a slider tool to adjust the sewing speed. I put it on my wishlist and mentioned to Stacy that I’d like it for my birthday. He was darling enough to cater to my impatience (as he often does) and let me have it when it arrived one week early.

The sewing machine, a Brother CS-6000i, is beautiful. It was easy to get started as the machine has drop-in bobbin and is self-threading. I practiced on some scrap fabric and then moved on to a couple of kits. Here are the results. Not too shabby for having the machine for less than a week.

Hey, they didn't show Obama's first pitch! He throws it and it goes off camera. Obviously, they thought it might bounce or something and didn't want to embarrass him? (Except, of course, that it was reportedly a perfect pitch. AND THEN THEY LIED ABOUT IT! Bastards.)

I decided to make two desserts for my birthday party. I made tiramisu, of which I have no pictures, and cupcakes! Stacy found the instructions how to make cheeseburger cupcakes on flickr. I didn’t think they turned out well but people seemed to assume they were sliders instead of cupcakes which is a success.
